Scaling and root planing is important to gum health and is the initial treatment in gingivitis and gum disease. When plaque and tartar get under the gums, the bacteria form pockets. The pockets form between the gums and teeth and cause the gums to start separating from the teeth in gum disease. Cleaning the pockets and removing bacteria allow the gums to heal.

Deep teeth cleaning can be done as part of a regular exam if scheduled in advance. Both dentists and hygienists can perform scaling and root planing. The procedure starts with a topical anesthetic to numb the injection site, followed by an injection to numb the gum. Typically, one side of the mouth is done in one appointment, so plan on two appointments for a complete cleaning. The cleaning can take between 30 minutes and an hour. Your mouth may feel sensitive once the anesthetics wear off. It’s best to keep to a soft diet that day. Most do not need pain medication after this procedure, but you can use over-the-counter pain medication to manage any discomfort.
